Extended Family Photoshoot in Hong Kong: FAQ & Styling Tips

Over the years, I’ve photographed all kinds of big families in Hong Kong — grandparents with their grown children, families with young kids or teenagers, households with pets, and couples.

People often worry about one thing: “Will the photos turn out beautiful and relaxed with such a large group?”

A photoshoot with me doesn’t have to be stressful at all. I design every session to feel like quality bonding time, full of laughter and natural moments - no stiff or cheesy poses.

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions I get about extended family photoshoots:

1. Styling Tips

Getting everyone to coordinate without looking like they’re in uniform can feel tricky, but it makes a huge difference in the final images. Some suggestions I have:

  • Choose a shared colour scheme: soft neutrals, whites, earth tones, or light shades like light blue work beautifully.

  • Pick outfits that complement each other rather than matching exactly—this keeps things natural and flattering.

  • Strongly avoid big logos or cartoon characters, as they can distract from faces and emotions.

  • For men: collar polos or button-up shirts

  • For ladies: loose, flowy tops or long dresses (if you love wearing one)

When in doubt, I’m happy to give feedback to your outfit too!

2. “I’m not a model” and “I don’t know how to pose”

You don’t need to be a model!

I guide every family gently so you can simply enjoy the moment. I often start with light, easy games to warm everyone up. Once the laughter starts flowing, people naturally forget about the camera and their real smiles shine through.

Grandparents light up when they share stories from the old days or play with their grandchildren. Kids treat the session like a fun family playdate, especially with a bit of friendly competition or silly games.

3. "We speak different languages in the family"

I’m fluent in both English and Chinese, so I can communicate comfortably with grandparents, parents, spouses, and kids alike.

As a mum of two super active boys myself, I’m patient and experienced at keeping kids engaged. I know how to bring everyone together, regardless of age or background, so the whole family feels included.

  1. Choosing the Right Location

For big groups, I usually recommend a spacious park where everyone can stay together without feeling crowded, and kids or pets have room to move safely.

I understand that the heat and humidity in Hong Kong can be challenging. I’m a natural light photographer and love working outdoors, but I can also suggest beautiful rental studios with plenty of windows for soft, flattering light.

I see family photoshoots as precious family bonding time. My job is to lead a fun, relaxed session tailored to your unique family—no one gets forced into anything, and everyone leaves with great memories and beautiful photos.
